Scale and Clean
Whitening
Rather than just attaching to the surface like tartar, caffeine and nicotine staining, some chemicals eg red wine, beetroot and curry, may actually penetrate deep into the surface of the teeth. This requires whitening with peroxide. This procedure can be completed as quickly as one hour if necessary.
Fissure Sealants
The back teeth have natural deep fissures, which are too fine to be cleaned by the individual bristles of a toothbrush with regular brushing twice a day. Thus these fissures are the most common areas for dental caries. Sealing the fissures with resin, will prevent dental caries in these areas.
Mouthguards
These come in clear and assorted colours. More effective bi-maxillary mouthguards are also available.
Occlusal Splints
If you have a habit of clenching or grinding your teeth [bruxism] during your sleep, or even daytime while still awake, then you may require an occlusal splint.
Failure to manage the condition causes the foreshortening of teeth, and the exposure of the dentine in the middle layer of the teeth which is soft and porous, thus highly susceptible to decay and root canal infections. Failure to manage the condition of clenching and grinding can also cause fracture of teeth, fracture of fillings, and even the fracture of crowns.
In short, the thickness of the splint opens the bite to reduce the force of clenching and grinding, meanwhile the splint allows you to grind the expendable acrylic away, rather than grind away your precious and irreplaceable enamel...
